Our Story
Alberta Team Handball Federation (ATHF) is the leading organization for handball in Alberta. ATHF became an official organization in 1976. Since 1976, ATHF has become Canada’s most prestigious province in handball winning 20 national championships in the last 10 years. Winning is just a part of our culture; we’ve also sent 30 players to play on the national team and 15 professionally in Europe. Final membership count last year was approximately 4,600.
As the official federation of Alberta, ATHF is responsible for the development of team handball in the province. The main responsibilities are: developing referees, coaches, athletes, and playing opportunities for all ages and skills. ATHF has one employee that reports to an eight-person board. Through out the year ATHF organizes 6 leagues, 3-5 tournaments, and hosts a variety of events. ATHF partners with Alberta School Athletic Association, Elk Island public schools, and Edmonton public school boards for high school and junior high.
